Chair Yoga and aging

Chair Yoga: your guide to enhanced well-being later in life

Staying active as you get older may help you live longer, and those extra years are generally healthier years! Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic illness and diseases associated with aging. Active adults maintain their quality of life and independence longer as they age.

Chair yoga is accessible – perfect for all skill levels

Typically, yoga is done on the floor, on a mat. Enter chair yoga! Chair yoga is a great adaptable way to get all the benefits associated with yoga without having to get up and down off the floor. It can even be helpful for people who use a wheelchair or use walkers.

One of the benefits we get from any yoga practice is improved mobility. When we move in many different ways our bodies fell less stiff and joint pain can be significantly reduced. These same movements help build strength, and can improve stability.

Mindful breathing with movement helps stimulate endorphin (aka the “happy” hormone) release reducing stress, depression, and improves overall well-being. Taking a class with other people also helps reduce loneliness, new relationships build and you develop a different avenue for community.

Yoga promotes a positive mindset by fostering mindfulness, gratitude, and non-judgmental awareness, all of which help shift perspective and cultivate inner peace. Struggle with brain fog and forgetfulness? Another benefit to mindful breathing is the enhanced cognitive functioning as we bring more oxygen to our brains.

When we feel better, we do better.
