Yoga Therapy

What is yoga therapy?

Yoga therapy is a specific application of the principles of yoga for therapeutic benefit. Using movement and posture, breathwork, chanting, philosophy, meditation, and visualization, it provides a holistic, whole-body approach to therapeutic healing.

What can yoga therapy help with?

Yoga therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions and complaints. This integrative modality can improve everything from physical concerns like back pain, range of motion limitations, and chronic pain to mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Yoga Therapists intentionally apply the framework of yoga, using a system which identifies imbalances in the body, along with a superior understanding of anatomy and an awareness of the overall physical, mental, and spiritual needs of the patient. Yoga therapy can be effective for post-surgical therapy, prenatal and postpartum therapy, for recovery following an injury, and more. It can be an effective compliment to other forms of treatment including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and mental health related therapies. While Yoga Therapy can improve many mental health challenges, a yoga therapist is not a trained psychotherapist and does not take the place of a mental health professional.

Yoga therapy is effective in treating:

  •  Back pain
  •  Shoulder and hip pain
  •  Diabetes
  •  High blood pressure
  •  Asthma
  •  Autoimmune disorders
  •  Chronic pain
  •  Plantar fasciitis
  •  Pelvic floor dysfunction
  •  Brain injuries
  •  COPD
  •  Parkinson’s
  •  Anxiety and depression
  •  Insomnia
  •  Addiction
  •  Eating disorders
  •  ADHD
  •  Postpartum depression
  •  PTSD and trauma

…just to name a few

Yoga Therapy Chatham NY

Yoga therapy provides individualized attention

Unlike participating in a Yoga class, each session with your therapist is a personal experience that is specifically tailored to your needs. Your one-on-one Yoga Therapy journey will begin with a thorough intake, and may include a physical assessment. Working together, the patient and Yoga Therapist will determine specific yoga practices to address the complaint in question. Your success and alleviation of symptoms may come within weeks or years. Most often, you can expect to receive better results for your condition the longer you commit yourself to your practice. Expect to see your Yoga Therapist for more than one session to ensure progress.

Your Yoga Therapist will make sure each movement is understood and practiced safely and effectively. Clients often go home with detailed plans to practice on their own or with your Yoga Therapist depending on preference and ability.

Practices may include various yoga poses to relieve tension or strengthen muscles, stretch muscles, improve range of motion. As well as breathing exercises and meditation practices that are specific to your unique situation.
