Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of yoga?
Yoga is a multifaceted practice which supports the mind, body, and spirit. Based upon ancient Indian practice and ayurvedic medicine, yoga focuses on movement, breathing, and meditation to soothe, strengthen, and heal.
Yoga is beneficial for people of all ages, and can improve physical and emotional complaints. Yoga can promote better flexibility, range of motion, sleep quality, strength, and balance, as well as providing stress relief and improved mental health. Yoga has even been shown to support a healthy immune system!
What is ayurveda?
Ayurveda translates to “the science of life”. It is an ancient Indian alternative medicine system, and the “sister practice” to yoga. Ayurveda is a holistic health practice that focuses on finding and maintaining balance in the body, while yoga is a physical practice utilizing movement, breathwork, and meditation.
What is yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy is a healing practice that uses the same basic movements and principles of yoga, but which applies them in a therapeutic way. Your yoga therapist intentionally uses yoga practice to address the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of the client. This healing system can soothe, stretch, or strengthen.
Why is yoga therapy different from physical therapy?
Physical therapy typically focuses on a specific body part or complaint, and requires ongoing hands-on application by a physical therapist. Yoga therapy offers a holistic view of healing that addresses all aspects of the patient’s personhood and needs. Unlike modern physical therapy, yoga therapy often does not require ongoing visits to the yoga therapist. An initial assessment will determine exercises and practices, and the patient is then empowered to continue their healing journey with or without the guidance of the yoga therapist.
Is yoga therapy expensive?
While we do not accept insurance, we believe that the value gained from yoga therapy is well worth the investment. Our standard rate is $125 per session, which is less than will often be owed by the patient after insurance pays for other physical therapy services.
Yoga therapy is not just a service provided by a therapist, but an invitation to be an active part of your healing journey. Because ongoing appointments are not always necessary, the care and instruction of your yoga therapist provides value over a longer period of time without additional financial investment.
What can I expect from yoga classes?
Public, or drop-in classes are led by experienced and qualified instructors. Class sizes are small, to ensure that instructors can focus on all students. Some classes may be intended for all skill levels, while others may be meant for beginners, intermediate, or experience yoga students. Adaptive practices are available, allowing students of all skills and abilities to participate in classes.
Private or semi-private classes will be held with your instructor and other participants (if applicable). These classes will be tailored to the needs and goals of the participants.
Why are your prices higher than classes at a gym?
Movement classes at Roots Holistic Wellness vary in price by type and instructor. In some cases, classes may cost more than those found at a gym or other fitness center, for several reasons.
Each of our instructors brings skill and experience to their classes, and offers individualized attention to their students. These are not one-size-fits-all exercise classes, but spiritual and physical practices that are meant to support the entire person. This requires a high level of experience, focus, and mindfulness, and is extremely demanding for the instructor.
Mindful Movement for Healthy Aging is taught by an experienced yoga instructor and certified yoga therapist. Students attending this class enjoy the affordability of a group class while getting the benefit of the instructor’s therapeutic training. As well as leading the class, the instructor attends to the specific needs of each student, making suggestions and offering accommodations as necessary to truly support the needs and abilities of all participants.
Yoga instructors are often underappreciated and underpaid. We seek to create a sustainable model for our studio, instructors, and community, while reinforcing the value that our instructors bring to these mindful movement classes.
We are confident that you will feel the difference between our class offerings and those available at gyms and fitness centers, and enjoy the deep sense of support and consideration in each.

Testimonials
“Stephanie is a great teacher! I’ve taken multiple Mindful Movement classes now but as a newbie I was apprehensive… Stephanie was warm, welcoming and attentive to the needs of the class! I also have taken her Lymphatic class which was super. Highly recommend her and her classes!” – Amber W.
“Stephanie’s Mindful Movement is the most wonderful yoga class I’ve taken. She will focus and adjust class movements to ensure clients’ particular needs are met. As a runner with various injuries, her classes help me take the time to focus on stretching and recovery.” I’m looking forward to trying more of the other diverse classes this year.” – Mary H.
“I am a 64 year old male. Stephanie carefully listened to me describe my many aches, pains and lack of range of motion. She provided excellent feedback to address my issues, and patiently explained and demonstrated the proper form for the stretches and exercises she prescribed. After incorporating her input into my exercise regimen I feel less aches and pains and have a greater range of motion. My upper and lower back, legs, and IT bands feel better than they have in years. I will continue to reach out to Stephanie for her excellent professional guidance and instruction.” – Jeff T.
